A Ritual Gathering to Feed the Holy
in Nature with Martín Prechtel

Depression comes from our Indigenous Soul’s allergic reaction to a human life relegated to an uncourageous spiritual mediocrity. After all humans are not rational by nature, but sane only when blessing. And blessing is an ecstatic non-economical activity that means being willing to feed the Holy in Nature and the seed that feeds us all. Sanity and beauty go together. We cannot stay depressed once we’ve become worthy enough to have even our beautiful failure accepted as a feast by the Holy in the Earth. But these Holies eat only delicious beauty and depth. Mediocrity kills the Holy in Nature. Every creature, storm, star, plant and grain of dust in the Natural Universe feeds every other particle of the Holy in Nature with its unique beauty and substance inherent in their diverse Indigenous natures.

The unique beauty that we humans have to give comes either from our opposable thumbs or the complexity of our voices sung with speech intended as a gift. This is what is meant by ritual and is an innate part of our nature. But for humans with intact souls, true ritual is not for human benefit, but a way for them to use their innate natural capacity for ecstatic blessing by making beauty to feed the Holy in Nature. We need to give beautiful gifts to what both feeds and amazes us. Even our failures, cultural stupidities, losses, confusions and clumsiness for having never been shown, can be metabolized into a compost from which to sprout the best gifts of all to feed the Flowering Earth, animals, plants, stars, ocean and air. Please come with me, Martín Prechtel, in Portland, Oregon on September 5th and 6th to help me to approach at least a little bit our Indigenous Soul’s innate ability to make an old ritual feast for the Holy with our wild canoe of songs, grief and the offerings of the ecstatic weeping of our thumbs, in hopes of turning either the bitter harshness or the bland mediocrity of our lives into a gift of beauty for a time of hope beyond our own.

— All Blessings -- Martín

About Martín Prechtel

A master of eloquence and innovative language, Martín Prechtel is a leading thinker, writer and teacher whose work, both written and oral, hopes to promote the subtle irony and pre-modern vitality hidden in any living language.

As a half blood Native American with a Pueblo Indian upbringing, his life took him from New Mexico to the village of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. There becoming a full village member of the Tzutujil Mayan population, he eventually served as a principal in that body of village leaders responsible for instructing the young people in the meanings of their ancient stories through the rituals of adult rights of passage.

Once again residing in his native New Mexico, Martín teaches at his international school Bolad’s Kitchen. Through story, music, ritual and writing, Martín helps people in many lands to retain their diversity while remembering their own sense of place in the daily sacred through the search for the Indigenous Soul.

Martín Prechtel is the author of : Stealing Benefacio’s Roses (The Toe Bone and the Tooth); The Disobedience of the Daughter of the Sun: Ecstasy and Time; Long Life, Honey in the Heart; and Secrets of the Talking Jaguar.

"The Mayan people's main and ancient job is to be beautiful and grateful. Before meeting Martín, I'd never known a representative of such a culture. But I can testify to the integrity, the massive learning, the faithfulness, the lighthearted joy and the hardworking nature of this representative."

Robert Bly

"Martín Prechtel is one of the most profound teachers I have ever encountered. He is an unusually gifted artist, musician, storyteller who guides and initiates with passion, kindness, eloquence, wisdom, fierceness and humor, awakening us to the sacred realities present everywhere at all times. To be with Martín is to remember the forgotten divinity that is the very essence of who we are."

Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield zt'l

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions regarding Martín Prechtel workshops in Portland and Ashland, Oregon

What happens during the workshop? What is it?

What we call "workshops" are really co-creative ceremonies in which we pool our creativity, griefs, ancestral inheritances, jokes, failures, and stories to create a collective offering to feed the Holy. They usually involve listening to stories, learning about layers of meaning for the various items we've gathered and brought to the event, beginning to make things for the ceremony, and compiling our individual gifts and creations into a collective offering or shrine.

Do I have to come for the whole two days?

Yes.

Can I attend part time?

No.

What if I have to leave early to catch a flight or for other reasons?

Please avoid leaving early. It makes things harder for Martín, tends to interfere with the ceremony, and can "orphan" partners with whom you have been working over the weekend. Please make your travel arrangements so that you can stay at the workshop until 6:00 pm on Sunday. We realize everyone has busy lives and we appreciate your sacrificing your time for this incredible event.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Sorry, we are not set up for credit card payments.

Are scholarships available?

A limited number of work-study scholarships are available. Scholarships are reserved for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.

Can I bring my children?

We welcome children in a spirit of village togetherness. Children under 12 can participate for free. Please be aware that there may be long stretches of sitting and listening.

Do I need to have read Martín's books before attending?

Reading Martín's books is not necessary, but it is very helpful in getting a context for what we are doing, and also for getting a sense of Martín's style and background.

Thank You!
