Bolad’s Kitchen Riddle Response Update

An announcement to all the lovers of what Bolad’s Kitchen is coming to be: to let all of you know that with the grace of the spirits and what feeds the churning earth we seem to have a sufficiently good showing of dedicated folks who want Bolad’s Kitchen to happen as to be able to say WE WILL begin in April 2004 as hoped for. This is not to say that the registration is full, but it is brimming with a diverse pot full of bubbling flower-like mouths hoping to drink the responsibility of the milk of Bolad’s Mare. We are still receiving registrations so those of you that want to but have not, feel free to apply.

As far as the riddle of Bolad’s Kitchen and the awarding of scholarship goes, the contest is now officially reached its maturity. In other words, out of the more than 80 attempts I have selected five whose work, eloquence, passion, deliciousness, uniqueness, and honest reliance on real books, instead of only on computers, conversations with living humans, and original thinking while sitting weeping under or climbing ecstatically up a no-longer-seen tree toward a never-before-seen thought have impressed me so emphatically as to consider the race as having been run.

Like a native ritual race whose apparent intensity of competition is never run for the sake of winning, but for the ritual feeding of the holy Sun by the magnificence of the race, this contest too has brought out the learning and many tendriled vine of historical and almost forgotten roads toward the core of its immensity, which, though none of the entries has found all of its major comprehensions, each has contributed a brilliant millionth flower to the great face of the meaning of Bolad’s Kitchen. I am very proud of all of you for this. In the course of reading the wonderful responses to the riddle I was sent to weeping not only by the diversity of what came in, but the immensity of the thirst, hunger and dimension of love for what I love, something I never dared hope for in the past. In other words, Bolad’s Kitchen is already in session.

The first place award will be a full scholarship, without room and board, for the The Younger’s two sessions of April and October. I will give the remaining scholarships to those with the next best responses and these will be for the one session in April only. If the person presenting one of these winning responses for single session scholarships has already signed up and paid and is not hurting for money, then I would ask that they present to me the name of someone on whose behalf their scholarship could be given. In the future all scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of the eloquence, depth and unexpected discovery found in their response to the next riddle which I shall post here after February, 2004.

At present those who have touched Bolad’s Kitchen riddle best with all it’s steel, cooking and grief: in other words the winners are at this time still being contacted personally and I have to decide whether or not to let everybody know via this form, but if we do post them it will not be for a week or so. The riddle is not solved, but well approached, and the contest is finished. I will teach the riddle as I see it during the first session of the school. The school is on. I can’t wait to get together.

All Blessings and thanks- Martín Prechtel
